讲座摘要:

This paper examines the effect of staggered adoption of state-level credit check bans (CCBs) on financially motivated neighborhood crimes. We find that counties in states implementing CCBs experience a 14.7% reduction in crime. This reduction is more pronounced in localities with more financially distressed residents or stronger protection of civil rights. We also find that CCBs increase the job-finding rates of persistently unemployed individuals and stimulate cross-state migration from non-CCB-states to CCB-states. Taken together, our findings reveal how limiting employer access to individual credit information generates meaningful societal benefits beyond the labor market.
